- Abstract
- A new heterogeneous catalytic system is proposed for the valorization of oleic acid to azelaic (AA) and pelargonic (PA) acid. For this purpose, alumina was used as support and functionalized with polydopamine which is a natural polymer bearing amine and catechol groups. This functionalized support was able to complex Ru ions in order to perform the oxidative cleavage of oleic acid along with NaIO4 as oxidizing agent. The deposition of polydopamine of alumina was confirmed by FTIR, TGA, and XPS analyses while Ru complexation was verified by ICP-AES measurements. The as prepared solid catalyst completed the transformation of oleic acid into AA and PA after 7 hours of stirring at room temperature. Moreover, the Ru-alumina catalyst remained active in the oxidative cleavage of oleic acid up to 5 consecutive catalytic tests without losing catalytic activity.
