- Abstract
This thesis explores the connections between antispeciesism and Marxism, questioning their theoretical and practical compatibility. The first chapter defines the fundamental concepts of antispeciesism and includes a bestiary that sets the theoretical framework by identifying the categories of animals to consider. This introduction serves as the foundation for subsequent discussions. The second chapter critiques the main philosophical approaches to antispeciesism—utilitarian, Kantian, and care ethics—to highlight their limitations and justify the need for a Marxist perspective. The third chapter develops the foundations of this approach by analyzing how Marxism can shed light on the condition of animals in a human-dominated world. The fourth chapter reverses the perspective by examining what antispeciesism can bring to Marxism, notably through a critical reading of anthropocentrism in Marx’s texts. Chapters five and six delve deeper into the compatibility of Marxist analyses with the animal question, focusing on the notions of labor and exploitation, contextualized within their historical framework and compared with contemporary theories. Finally, the conclusion proposes avenues to integrate non-human animals into a renewed Marxist framework. It critiques orthodox Marxism and addresses the strategic challenges of morality and ethics in revolutionary struggles. This thesis aims to provide a theoretical contribution that is both critical and forward-looking, to conceptualize antispeciesism within a Marxist perspective.
