- Abstract Background: Floods are the most common natural hazards to disasters in Bangladesh as well as in the world and have led to direct and indirect impacts on health. Only a few studies have been done to find out the impacts of the flood on maternal and newborn health (MNH). The aim of the study was to find the impacts of the flood on MNH care utilization in Bangladesh between the year 2011 and 2014. Settings: The area of study was Bangladesh. Bangladesh experienced five floods between 2011 and 2014. By these floods, about 208 people have died and more than 10 million people being affected. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional quantitative study design has been done to find out the impact of the flood on MNH in Bangladesh by using BDHS 2014 data and georeferenced data of flood between 2011 and 2014 from EM-DAT. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine whether the flood-affected region is significant in predicting differences in maternal and newborn health. Results: The odds for the institutional delivery, delivery by c-section, postnatal care of the babies were significantly less (Unadjusted OR=0.88, 0.83, 0.76, and 0.82 respectively; P<0.005) in the flood affected area than that of the non-affected area. Additionally, the odds of mother postnatal checkup was highly significant (P<0.001) and less likely to receive in the flooded area (OR=0.76). The odds of all indicators were significantly less (OR<1; P<0.001) for the women living in the twice flooded area. In case of year wise analysis, the odds of all indicators were significantly less (OR<1; P<0.001) for the women living in the area affected by flood both in 2012 and 2014. Conclusion: The findings of the study have shown that flood can have a negative impact on maternal and newborn healthcare utilization. Some indicators have shown the better result for predicting maternal and newborn health in the flooded area due to proper intervention, humanitarian aid and people’s adaptive mechanism to the floods.
