- In today's society, supply chains face increasing pressure to comply with stringent regulations and meet the growing demand for sustainability from consumers. Nowadays, it is crucial for companies to adopt and prioritize sustainable supply chain management (SSCM). This concept is a fairly new idea that combines the three aspects of sustainability (economic, environmental and social) into managing supply chains. As customers become more concerned with corporate social responsibility, businesses must adapt their practices to ensure environmental sustainability. For all these reasons, supply chain management has become increasingly complex in the last few years. As a response, companies have started implementing vertical integration and collaboration practices to address these challenges. This thesis explores the key success factors of vertical collaboration and vertical integration that influence environmental sustainability within the supply chain. The research combines a comprehensive literature review with multiple case studies from the food sector to provide both theoretical and practical insights. The main objective of this paper is to analyze the key success factors of vertical collaboration and integration to determine which have the most significant impact on environmental sustainability and which play a more secondary role. Our findings reveal that trust-based, long-term partnerships are the most critical and the absolute bases for successful and sustainable collaboration. Trust will be a trigger for all the other factors we analyze in this work. This research has enabled us to make recommendations to companies wishing to achieve environmental sustainability objectives via vertical collaboration, such as moving these objectives as a priority rather than as a constraint.
