Abstract
Discourse markers are tools in linguistics that allow for better organization of information in discourse, better structure of speech, and better interpretation and enunciation of the message beyond the literal statement. Although its role as a facilitator of communication and understanding of discourse is unanimously accepted by experts, they do not seem to agree on a general denomination and a definitive categorization of the term discourse markers. These markers are present in the oral and written expression of native and non-native speakers alike. However, the frequency, forms, and functions of use vary between these two groups, just as these variations can also be found within an audience composed exclusively of non-native speakers but with different educational backgrounds. This dissertation is presented in the form of a contrastive analysis of an oral corpus of ten French-speaking students learning Spanish. These students have a level of competence in Spanish estimated between the intermediate and advanced level according to the MCER. Moreover, half of them have spent more than three months in a Spanish-speaking country for various reasons before starting their university studies. The first objective is therefore to compare the use that each of the students makes of discourse markers and different discourse strategies. The second and ultimate goal of this work is to present the heterogeneous criteria of the different language programs that our learners have followed in order to identify if their experiences abroad have influenced the evolution of their oral skills and therefore of the acquisition of these markers.
