- Abstract
- England and Scotland have had tumultuous relations for centuries. After years of wars and treaties, the nations unified to become Great Britain and will later be major parts of the United Kingdom. However, Scottish nationalism has never faded and Scottish independence has been seriously discussed for a few years, especially now. Throughout this thesis, I will survey Brexit with a focus on the Scottish point of view, including Scotland's differentiated solutions suggested by its Government to ensure the nation's place within Europe. Then, I will trace the history behind the heated relations between England and Scotland, as well as the evolution of Scottish nationalism during the 20th century. Those two key parts will logically be followed by the last chapter that is entirely dedicated to the Scottish National Party. Nicola Sturgeon party has become the face of nationalism and is currently fighting for independence. SNP’s political position and future plan of action will be decisive in the shaping of “post-Brexit” Scotland. Eventually, this thesis will be brought to a close with my conclusion on whether, with all elements taken into account, Scottish independence is bound to happen or not.
