User-defined body gestures by elicitation : from individual to collaborative gestures

- We present empirical results about user-defined body gestures by elicitation. We studied individual gestures with one group of 30 participants who elicited 720 upper-body gestures for 24 referents associated to the gaming field (in collaboration with Skemmi). Then, we focused on multi-cultural collaborative gestures with 15 groups (of two participants) who also elicited 720 full-body gestures for 24 referents for which they had to carry out actions together. A Microsoft Kinect V2 was used to record the different gestures produced. Both studies were conducted in a usability laboratory and are fully reproducible by other teams in the future. We report an overall high consensus between participants’ gesture proposals. For the first study, mean: .468, min: .057, max: 1 while for the second one, mean: .699, min: .229, max: 1 on the unit scale. Participants were particularly satisfied with the gestures they chose to perform during the first study whereas, for the second one, this consensus is correlated to referents that imposed the initiation of the movement. It suggests that we must be more cautious with these kinds of referents. Participants’ thinking time was much less similar (min: 1.53 sec, max: 8.97sec for the first study; min: 1 sec, max: 60.06 sec for the second one), which suggests that upper-body and full-body gestures are not all similarly obvious to imagine and to produce. We also point out the future challenges in the field of multi-cultural gestures to explore.
