Abstract
This study aims at analyzing the state of crypto payments as well as potential future trends that could determine mass adoption of these digital currencies within the real economy. For this purpose, the main cryptocurrency, being Bitcoin, is taken as a reference and the decision of accepting it as a form of payment is analyzed. Specifically, the reasons for starting to accept it, commercial benefits, re-deployment of this revenue and accounting issues are considered. Moreover, reputational aspects and future trends concerning opinions of central banks and governments are also considered. Finally, a conclusion is given providing an answer to the research question, wondering whether it is convenient or not to integrate this alternative and more volatile assets to the revenue mix. The sample considered, as described in the title, are mainly SMEs located in Italy and Switzerland.
