Abstract
Iran, a country that embodies both the greatest glories of antiquity, but which has also undergone full whip Western colonialism, and in particular British. At the same time victim of its central geographical position, crossroads of the great empires in the Middle East, but also actor of its destiny by launching itself also towards great conquests, the country of the Shahs is an important place because of its wealth, and in particular oil. Coveted on all sides, Iran asserts itself and tries to find an identity by nationalism sometimes exacerbated, then tries its independence thanks to the support of the Shiite clergy, a caste firmly anchored in the socio-political milieu of the country. Ayatollah Khomeini, guide of the revolutionary events of 1979, is no stranger to the fall of the imperial regime of Mohammed Pahlavi, the latter being a pawn of the West and one of the greatest despots of the second half of the twentieth century in the area. Through the testimonies of the diplomatic documents of the Belgian Foreign Ministry, this present work will determine to what extent the West supported the Shah in his race for wealth and whether governments were aware of the domestic situation. Could we determine a certain responsibility, or can we find a link between these events and the fact that the Persian country is landlocked between the two Cold War blocs? Could we foresee the revolutionary overthrow? Was the country, ready to implode, manipulated by the great powers? What was the role of Europe, the United States, the USSR and even Belgium in these events? Thanks to these new sources, this work will try to answer and determine the origins and the consequences of one of the greatest diplomatic upheavals of the 20th century…
