- Abstract
- Parliamentarians use different conversational strategies to express their views during sessions. One of these strategies is the use of so-called epistemic parentheticals. They are parts of a sentence isolated from the main clause with commas, parentheses or simply with the sentence structure or the intonation of the speaker. In this work, we focus on a single verb, creer, in the first person singular and plural in Spanish and English, I believe. To analyse the use of these parentheticals, let us compare the corpus data of the European Parliament in English and Spanish about some points, being the number of cases, their position in the sentence and their function in the discourse. Other researchers have done research on the same subject comparing other languages, analysing different contexts, or analysing other verbs and their conclusions about the studied characteristics generally agree between them although there are exceptions. What is observed here is the substantial similarity between languages despite the differences of origin and syntactic constructions.
