Abstract
Since 1995, the European Commission has advocated for foreign language learning and set the goal that every Europese citizens should be able to speak at least two foreign languages. It is primordial in our current globalized world. This is why the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles has taken several actions to promote multilingualism. One of these initiatives is the EXPEDIS (Expérience Éducative d'Immersion Scolaire) mobility programme, which came out in September 2011 and offers pupils from the third to the sixth year of secondary education the opportunity to spend part of their school career in the Flemish or German-speaking Community of Belgium or abroad. The purpose of this thesis is to conduct an online survey to examine how students look back on their EXPEDIS experience and to analyze its impact on their language skills and personality. The first part of this thesis carries out a theoretical description of foreign language learning and the different learning methods. Then, the administrative and legal aspects of the EXPEDIS programme and the various organizations offering this type of stay are covered. Finally, the results of our survey are analyzed, showing that all young people who went with EXPEDIS were satisfied with their experience, which had a positive impact on their personality and language skills.
