Abstract
The main aim of this final year project (TFE) is to explore whether the flywheel energy storage system could be an environmentally-friendly alternative to batteries in satellites. As the technology has never been deployed, the aim is not to come up with a production-ready design, but rather to understand the issues at stake, assess the technical feasibility of the system and, finally, formulate hypotheses to create a framework for comparing the two storage systems. Once these assumptions have been made, a life-cycle analysis of the two systems is carried out to determine their environmental impacts.
