- Abstract
- Objective: The investigators wished to document the benefit of a low-to-moderate intensity compared to a high intensity exercise training in pre-adolescents (5th and 6th-grade children). The aim was to identify the most effective programme for improving psychological well-being, and reducing depression and anxiety symptoms. Methods: The participants were 23 pre-adolescents (aged between 9 and 12 years) involved in an education programme. The investigators proposed to perform a prospective and randomized study. Participants were enrolled during 5 weeks to follow 4 training sessions a week, either in an intensive aerobic exercise regime or in a low-moderate exercise programme conducted in parallel. Psychological symptoms (using questionnaires) and physical condition (through physical testing) were assessed before and after intervention in both programmes. Results: General linear model with these 2 criteria revealed significant changes in anxiety symptoms over time in the low-to-moderate intensity group. Within each group, changes over time were also assessed and significant improvement of anxiety and depression symptoms was observed in the low-moderate intensity group only. Conclusion: This study indicated that a low-to-moderate physical activity programme, which promoted pleasure, derived from movement and positive interactions, whilst avoiding focus on performance, may be a good way to improve depression and anxiety symptoms in a non-clinical sample of pre-adolescents.
