- Abstract
- Since the end of the post-Martial Law Era and with the introduction of a democratic era, a debate emerged in Taiwan on the topic of the cross-Strait relations. The issue of the debate is the multiple prospects for the future of the island, divided in three majour options: a (limited or everlasting) status quo, a complete independence or a reunification with the mainland. While the first two have more or less grown since 1992, the last option has known a decrease in support. On the other hand, we can see a correlation with the decrease of "Chinese" identity and a rise of the "Taiwanese identity" to a certain point. As foreign policies of a country can be made following its domestic opinion, the question is here to see how the political elite of Taiwan shaped this domestic opinion both with discourses and policy-making in order to achieve a certain foreign policy.
