- Abstract
- Objective: The investigators wished to document the benefit of a moderate intensity physical activity compared to a relaxation activity in adolescents in a juvenile psychiatric hospital. The aim was to investigate whether the exercise program can reduce depression and anxiety symptoms in a preliminary analysis of results. Methods: 13 adolescents, all admitted in psychiatric hospital, participated in a prospective and randomized study. They were enrolled to follow 4 sessions a week, to reach 20 sessions in total, either in a moderate aerobic exercise regime or in a relaxation programme, conducted in parallel. Psychological symptoms (using questionnaires and diagnosis by psychiatrists) and physical conditions (through physical testing) were assessed before and after intervention in both programmes. Pre-Results: Independent tests revealed significant changes in depression symptoms over time in the exercise group. Within each group, changes over time were also assessed and significant improvement of anxiety and depression symptoms was observed only in the exercise group. Conclusion: This study indicated that a moderate physical activity programme, which promoted pleasure and positive interactions, whilst avoiding focus on performance, may be a good way to improve depression and anxiety symptoms in adolescents and an effective complementary treatment in juvenile psychiatry.
