Abstract
“Les Misérables” has been adapted in different languages and various media, including manga and, more specifically, shōnen since its publication in 1862. This latest form of adaptation involves several artistic changes, including reworking the Hugolian text into iconotexts and applying the standards of this Japanese genre. We found interesting to work with this manga adaptation that is also aimed at a new target audience: young teenagers and, especially, boys. Thus, this master thesis focuses on Takahiro ARAI's rewriting of “Les Misérables” in shōnen, translated into French by Nesrine MEZOUANE (2015-2017). Consequently, this Japanese creation reworks a famous French literary work from the 19th century, which allows us to question its different intercultural, editorial, economic and translational issues. In addition, this specific revaluation in manga produces cultural hybridisations between Japanese and French symbolics. Our critical analysis will be animated by the modern dynamic of ARAI’s work.
