Abstract
The focus of this dissertation is on meetings in English. With the growing workforce mobility and the workplace diversity characterising today’s economy, multilingualism is part and parcel of the business world. However, multinational and multilingual companies often need to choose one language as their lingua franca. English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. In the western world and in a large number of other countries, English is used as a lingua franca. Business English is generally used by companies who want to work with foreign customers and suppliers. Employees of these companies need a high and specific level of English to be able to do their work successfully. In this dissertation, a large number of specialised manuals, academic publications and textbooks that focus on English in a business context will be methodically analysed. This dissertation aims to explore similarities and differences between specialised manuals and academic publications on the one hand, and Business English textbooks on the other hand, as well as to critically compare and contrast these three types of publications.
