Abstract
This Master’s thesis addresses the situation and management of the jihadist radicalisation in two European Member States, Italy and Belgium. The concept of radicalisation, as the academic debate proves, has several definitions depending from the context and the field taken into consideration. It is useful to bear in mind that, more often than not, this term is matched with that of terrorism. By analysing the concept, many academics illustrate how it is simple to create misunderstandings and misconceptions, and it is undeniable how the mass media sometimes worsen the situation. As a result, each country use different methodologies to recognize the existence of radicalised persons and adopt ad hoc measures to treat and prevent the problem. Since many years, the European Commission is working to eradicate terrorism and its sources. Therefore, one of the main point in the EU agenda is to prevent terrorist attacks by addressing and stopping terrorist radicalisation and recruitment, but without being being confined to one faith or political ideology. The strong point of this policy is focalised on working with local communities through the European Union Radicalisation Awareness Network (RAN).
