- Abstract
- The present thesis consists of a partial commented translation of Melissa Lane’s book The Birth of Politics: Eight Greek and Roman Political Ideas and Why They Matter. This book is an account of politics at the time of ancient Greece and Rome. It relates the birth of this concept through eight ideas as conceived by the ancient Greeks to begin with and than as conceived by the Romans. These ideas were selected because they are the most likely to resonate with contemporary readers. They aimed at helping understand how politics was imagined in Antiquity in order to better understand current political systems and their origins. To do so, Lane relies on several works made by philosophers and dramatists of that time who concerned themselves with examining almost every political decision. This thesis is divided into three sections; the introduction in which prior knowledge is given about the Greek civilisation, the relevance of Athens and the different political systems this era has known in order to facilitate the good understanding of the translation. Then, there is the translation that is based on two chapters of the book, i.e. the introduction and Justice. And finally, the section dedicated to comments on the different obstacles I encountered during the process of translation.
