Abstract
Manual wood log stoves are the most common stoves on the market, but their use has been criticised for increasing local air pollution. By the first of January 2022, all wood stoves sold in the European Union will have to meet the EcoDesign requirements which limits the CO, VOCs and NOx emissions of the stoves. The legislation in Belgium is even more demanding since 2012. The air supply in the wood stove affects the combustion quality. Automatic air management systems have already been developed for wood stoves and the results are encouraging. The aim of this master’s thesis is to implement such a system and to improve the pollutant emissions of the manual wood stove on which the system was tested. This thesis includes a literature review of the air supply technologies in wood stoves. This review was used to create different air supply control strategies. These strategies were tested and are presented in this text. Conclusions were drawn from these tests and recommendations on how to improve the designed system were made.
