- Abstract
- Today supply chain management has come to a point where for companies to achieve a competitive advantage every single node should be optimized. This thesis discusses the optimization of one of these nodes at Delhaize Belgium, namely the picking activity. More specifically, the picking of variable weight-products is examined. This type of products comes with an additional challenge as it requires more handling, thus more costs. Indeed, as will be showed in this study, variable-weight products demand an additional step in the picking activity compared to fixed-weight products. This extra step is a direct consequence of the variability in weight of these products. Each variable-weight product potentially can have a different weight, and thus price, which has to be recorded manually unlike fixed-weight products for which this is fixed. Ways to make the supply chain more effective, while cutting costs through a more efficient picking of the variable-weight products are discussed here.
