Abstract
Previous research posits cognitive control deficits to be responsible for the onset of depression in adolescents. This relation is believed to be mediated by repetitive thinking processing mode, whereby the deficits promote the use of negative, abstract thinking whilst in emotional situations. This, in turn, worsens depressive symptoms. As such, cognitive control training holds major potential as a treatment for the disorder, yet remains considerably underdeveloped in youth samples. In addition, transfer effects of training within this age group are often minimal, due to the adolescents’ lack of intrinsic motivation to partake in this type of training. The present study thus reports the feasibility and effectiveness of a novel, cognitive control training with game elements, in adolescents with emotional problems. Five adolescents attended an 11-session group cognitive training intervention, during which they participated in psychoeducative activities, and commercially-available cognitive games. The latter trained inhibition, working memory updating, and cognitive flexibility. At post-intervention assessment, several adolescents showed reliable improvements in inhibition, working memory updating, attentional behavior, repetitive thinking, and various symptoms of depression. This pilot study thus supports the feasibility, and preliminary effectiveness of a group cognitive training intervention incorporating game elements.
