- Previous studies on the colonial past have investigated representation in history books and literature. Although the media criticize the knowledge of the colonial past, little research has been done on the colonial past in education, in addition to history research. In this thesis, the focus is on the Congo literature in the textbooks Dutch in Flanders. The textbooks are studied using the descriptive analytical method that has an eye for detail and is based on predetermined questions that will be answered. The results show that some of the learning methods discuss the literature about the Congo superficially and in several cases only uses the literature to describe the characteristics of a literary movement. However, a number of teaching methods take the opportunity to discuss the colonial past in detail, giving the pupils a nuanced picture of the colonial past and allowing them to think about the past in a critical way.
