- Abstract
- This master's thesis examines how Pierre Dubois, in three of his works of creative fiction – the Grandes encyclopédies – proposes a vision of a magical world in an attempt to re-enchant the reader's worldview. The first part of this thesis presents the recent history of the fantasy genre, along with the contemporary challenges it faces, and provides insights into the genesis of the three Grandes encyclopédies. The second part is dedicated to a textual analysis of the three Grandes encyclopédies. In this second part, we examine how Dubois convincingly presents an enchanted world to the reader by using narrative techniques—most notably, the technique of creating confusion at every level between fiction and non-fiction. This enchanted literary world aims to enable the reader to transform their perspective on the real world into that of an enchanted world, thereby enabling them to acquire a meaningful way of life that harmonises with nature and their own human nature.
