Abstract
This master thesis will focus on eye tracking for designing the user interface of a multimodal train driving simulator and for evaluating its usage by learners. We will first try to understand the major issues of using simulation and more particularly for the train driving simulation context. As with all modern and new technological tools, railway simulations are in a perpetual process of development and engineers constantly attempt to make improvement of the actual state of the technology. In this dissertation we will discuss the different mechanics and methods of those progresses. Especially we will discuss the eye-tracking tool that allows capturing gaze points of a user. We will describe the technology and show its benefits when coupled to railway simulators, whether it is for interface evaluation or for simulation interaction. To ensure the benefit of such a device, a small Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research work as been made on eye tracking for the design of User Interface (UI) combined with the eye-tracking gaze plot of a user. The study with the help of the Usybus software environment shows the benefits of eye tracking over the User Interface development cycle and adaptive User Interface. Subsequently, we will explain how eye tracking can be paired with simulations, more particularly train simulation. Finally, this dissertation will propose a concrete application of the eye-tracking tool developed on the simulator solution of Transurb which is the Graph Analyser. More than capturing point of gaze, the tracking device acquired by the UCL for research can capture the cognitive workload of its users that is a measurement of the mental activity of the subject. This information could help the instructor in his teaching tasks for rolling stock driving.
