Abstract
Ecology has never been more important than today. Regarding this global trend, several solutions could be considered such as making the vehicles lighter. Removing some parts in the vehicle structure is rarely a good idea, because nobody wants to favor low weight at the expense of safety. Vehicles still need to be at least as secure as before. Therefore composite materials are more and more studied in order to replace traditional metal parts because they are lighter and they can be as strong (if not more) as metal. Taking this approach, the current work aims to study the mechanical behavior of some polymers under high strain rates. In this context, Solvay offered to supervise the current research thanks to the help of some researchers and machines located in their campus in Brussels. Cycom 890 is a high quality thermoset resin produced by Solvay. It has been tested under high strain rates through the use of a Digital Image Correlation (DIC) software. Results were then compared to similar ones found in the literature and the accuracy of DIC results was addressed. This research takes place in the industrial world which is a competitive and fast evolving world, some alternatives have to be found to allow high productivity and efficient work. This is why a MATLAB model was used and developed. Once fully improved, it would allow to simulate rapidly the behavior of polymers under different mechanical loadings.
