- Abstract
- We investigate the possibility of constructing continuous relative well-being measures that embody fairness principles, respect preferences and satisfy additional requirements about the criteria for comparing bundles. The relative well-being measure explicitly takes into account the fact that individuals assess their well-being by making comparisons. We propose a measure that depends on the utility representation of agent's preferences over the bundle of resources she consumes and on the bundle of resources that constitutes her benchmark. The three criteria proposed to compare agents are: equality of bundles, equality of indifference sets and crossing indifference sets. We find that there is no such a continuous relative well-being measure that respects the crossing indifference sets criteria for both consumption and benchmarks.
