Abstract
This work proposes a study of theatrical improvisation. Firstly in a historical perspective. Secondly by analyzing the specificities of improvisation as a discipline. And finally by focusing on the landscape of the Belgian Francophone scene and its configuration. Improvisation was long considered a tool of repetition and work for the actor by the important names of Western theater, before becoming a discipline in its own right, with its own tradition, its figures and its codes. It is intimately linked to the theatrical history of the 20th century. Improvisation involves a new way of thinking the actor, in the state of readiness and availability for performance, and to think about the show, in its relationship to the public and its relationship to risk. It suggests specific learning methods and pedagogies. The development of improvisation in Belgium is the legacy of Quebec practice and the concept of “match d’improvisation”.
