- Abstract
- Baroque statues of apostles adorning the columns of church naves are quite common in our regions, yet those present in the collegiate church of Saint-Vincent de Soignies, dating from the end of the 17th century, have never been the subject of a complete study. This thesis fills this gap by carrying out a contextual, formal, material, iconographic and stylistic analysis of these works. Since they are no longer identifiable, due to the loss of their attributes, and have never been attributed to an artist, this research examines these issues in greater detail. To do so, the sculptures are compared with works both present in Soignies, such as the stalls of David Mulpas or the pulpit of Baudouin Lalou, but also with other sets of apostles of the former Southern Netherlands as well as with artworks present in the church of Saint-Nicolas en Havré in Mons.
