- This study investigates the complexities surrounding sustainable beverage packaging, with a focus on the entire life cycle of packaging materials. It explores the potential of Ref-PET (refillable plastic) bottles, and the environmental impact of reusable packaging production, considering its durability and proper management. By analysing the performance of reusable bottles in comparison to single-use options, the research highlights the need for exploring new materials and collection systems, given the prevalence of PET bottles in the beverage industry. The European Union's (EU) commitment to plastic reduction through recycling quotas and reusing packaging is examined, with Deposit Return Schemes (DRS) emerging as an efficient approach to achieving these goals. This study proposes the implementation of a Ref-PET DRS in Belgium as a viable means of reducing plastic waste. While acknowledging the challenges, such as high investments and consumer behaviour, this research suggests that Belgium's Eco- tax can serve as an incentive for investment in waste management. Drawing insights from successful Ref-PET strategies and DRS implementations in other countries, this study provides recommendations for overcoming country-specific obstacles and fostering stakeholder cooperation. Ultimately, this research aims to pave the way for the effective and sustainable integration of a Ref-PET DRS in Belgium's soft drinks packaging portfolio.
