- Abstract
- In recent years, our digital lives have become increasingly reliant on being continuously connected to the internet. This constant connectivity can be overwhelming, with the quality of online experiences often determined by the passion and interest of the creator. This project explores the creation of different web browsing experiences, focusing on two main modes: a unified text-based approach(1) and an annoyance-free user interface(2). (1)UnifiedText, also known as Offpunk’s Graphical Companion, stands out as an option for people looking for a unique digital experience. Utilizing an open-source tool called Offpunk to render Hyper Text Markup Language(HTML) content as well as caching functions for offline use. This allows users to access their preferred web content both online and offline, empowering people with more control over their digital interactions. (2)The User Experience (UX) focus of this study goes beyond providing a simple graphical interface. It ensures that all potential annoyances, such as intrusive ads and cookie notifications, to minimize disruptions which aligns with the concept of ’enshittification’. Furthermore, special attention is given to improving web surfing speed, particularly for devices with high latency and limited CPU capabilities. In conclusion, this thesis examines UnifiedText and its potential impact on the digital landscape, offering valuable insights for individuals interested in alternate browsing. This improvement aims to broaden Offpunk’s appeal and accessibility to a wider variety of users, further emphasizing the significance of this work in the context of Offpunk.
