Abstract
This paper questions the historical truth written or rewritten by the cinema about the genocide of the indigenous people called Selk'nam in the film Tierra del Fuego (2000) by the Chilean filmmaker Miguel Littín. A brief description of the Selk'nam people and their comogeny will be presented, based on the consultation of different historical and academic sources, such as those of the Chilean writer Francisco Coloane, the German anthropologist Anne Chapman or an official report of the Chilean state. An exhaustive study will be devoted to the polemic Julius Popper, who is the key character and the selected gateway between history and fiction. Next, we will address the general aspects of the Eurocentric vision in relation to the perception and image of the indigenous in two film productions (Tierra del Fuego, Miguel Littín, 2000) and Los Colonos, Felipe Gálvez 2019), highlighting the possible incidences or coincidences between the two, followed by an in-depth analysis of a film sequence from Littín's film. On the other hand, we will be interested in the version of the indigenous people themselves, through various testimonies collected or framed by Anne Chapman in the documentary Los Onas (1976). Furthermore, we will inspect official documents of the Chilean state authorities as well as other documentary materials whose reviews I expect relevant to withdraw the conclusion and answer of the present dissertation.
