Abstract

Abstract The printed press has been undergoing a decline for several years. Therefore, it is interesting to wonder why the press is going through such a crisis and try to understand which factors have influenced this situation. The aim of this research is to detect the future of the printed media in a world surrounded by new technologies. This work focused on the evolution of printed press and journalism in the United Kingdom which has a very strong national press. Two types of press characterize the British press: broadsheet newspapers with supposed high-quality press and tabloids with entertaining news. Thanks to a theoretical analysis and a specific study of The Guardian newspaper, we understand the importance of digital media. One might think that online media provide less qualitative news, but their contribution in terms of instantaneity, interactivity and variety of channels implies media organizations will have to integrate them in their strategy. The printed media also showed its strengths with deeper analysis, patterns or specific layouts linked to the paper format as well as its journalism, which is in some cases a way to guarantee democracy. Résumé La presse écrite subit depuis plusieurs années un déclin. Il est donc intéressant de se demander pourquoi la presse subit-elle une telle crise et d’essayer de comprendre quels ont été les facteurs influençant celle-ci. Le but de cette recherche est de parvenir à déceler le futur de la presse écrite dans un monde baigné par les nouvelles technologies. Ce travail s’est focalisé sur l’évolution de la presse écrite et du journalisme au Royaume Uni qui a une presse nationale très forte. On y trouve de la presse dite de qualité ainsi que des tabloïds plus divertissants. Grâce à une analyse théorique et une étude spécifique du journal The Guardian, on comprend l’importance des versions numériques qu’on aurait pu croire moins qualitatives mais qui ont montré tout leur apport en terme d’instantanéité, d’interactivité et de liens vers d’autres supports telle que la vidéo. La presse écrite a aussi montré ses atouts avec des analyses parfois plus profondes, des schémas ou des explications propres à un format papier ainsi que son journalisme qui se veut dans certains cas garant de la démocratie.
