Abstract
Learning modern languages at school is a current issue. Learning Dutch may seem boring or complicated to some students. The quality of the lessons and the content of the lessons has an important impact on the student's motivation to learn and to make an effort to pass the lessons. In this research, the question is turned to the presence and use of authentic literary material in learning textbooks in the Walloon-Brussels Federation as well as in Germany, where Dutch is also taught in secondary school. Based on the realities of each region and the objectives and criteria set out in the reference materials, the research in this dissertation consists of an analysis of the current situation through the reference materials, while at the same time analysing the textbooks available on the market for pupils in the final year of general education. In the research, we will take a closer look at textbooks and the use of literary, authentic or didactic fragments, their diversity and their function. The aim of the research is to find out whether there are differences between textbooks and between regions and whether these are significant and to what extent they diverge or converge.
