Abstract
As early as the 5th-millennium BC, the Michelsberg Culture embodied the Middle Neolithic in Belgium, whose population migrated from the Paris’ Basin. Some of their remains are still perceptible in today’s landscape. Much has been written about their function and the space they enclosed, but several aspects of their life have only been explored through a scattered literature. This is why, before characterizing Boitsfort’s occupation, this paper will offer an overview of the Michelsberg Culture in Belgium. This research focuses on the lithic industry, exploring the many artefacts discovered at Boitsfort - Etangs from the 20th century to the present day and gathered at the Royal Musuem of Art and History in Brussels. Technical drawings and pictures, used to define the lithic equipment, result from this examination. The main conclusion from the lithic material analyzed shows that the Michelsberg populations were not confined to the Etangs’ earthworks, but rather extended over a wider array within the present-day municipality of Watermael-Boitsfort. Moreover, no structure of habitat has been discovered inside the dirt ramparts, despite the excellent soil conservation and the many domestic traces detected by our analyses of the artifacts. Nonetheless, Sylvie Byl’s architectural research in 2010 and the study of lithic equipment, through the scope of Michel Fourny and Michel Van Assche’s theories, highlighted both diverse and homogeneous establishments that have tirelessly modified the enclosed surface of Boitsfort - Etansg. Therefore, Boitsfort’s sites reveal a network of long-term and miscellaneous Michelsberg activities. In short, the local, the mining and the Mesolithic traditions on the site of Etangs form a coherent whole; the earthworks and ditches represented and defined a meeting place between them. Consequently, the absence of habitat, the construction of dirt ramparts and their remodeling become intelligible.
