- Abstract
- This thesis explores the impact of cryptocurrencies, with a particular focus on Bitcoin, on traditional financial markets. Bitcoin was created in response to the 2008 financial crisis as an alternative to fiat currencies. It has since gained traction as a substitute currency and has also positioned itself as a competitor to traditional financial markets and gold. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part provides an overview of the history and development of traditional financial markets. The second part examines the main cryptocurrencies and the underlying technologies. The third part presents an econometric analysis of the relationship between Bitcoin and the S&P 500 stock index. The results of the study suggest that Bitcoin has a significant impact on traditional financial markets. The thesis concludes that cryptocurrencies, and Bitcoin in particular, are not a passing fad, but a disruptive and potentially permanent force in the global financial landscape.
