- Abstract
- Summary The goal of this thesis is to get a better view on the drivers behind Chinese Outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI) in the telecommunication sector. The thesis is structured in five main chapters. The first chapter shows the enormous and increasing relevance of Chinese OFDI by using aggregate data. The second chapter presents a preliminary view on the Chinese telecommunication sector, with some of the more relevant particularities to understand the thesis properly. These two introductory chapters are necessary to properly understand all the subtleties in the case studies of part four. The main part of the thesis starts in chapter three. This chapter contains a research methodology section explaining the choice for the case-study based approach. The main body of this third chapter, however, is a literature review that has as a result the framework used to analyze the case studies of part four. For a visual representation of the aspects in the framework, one can refer to the exhibits. Chapter four presents detailed case studies on five Chinese telecommunication companies: China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Huawei and ZTE. All five case studies present a view of the domestic operations as well as their operations abroad. In all cases the investments most relevant to the thesis were chosen for a deeper analysis. Chapter five tries to combine chapter three and chapter four by analyzing the Chinese telecommunication sector as a whole by applying the framework to the five carefully selected cases. Each of the aspects in the framework are investigated more thoroughly through a literature review, after which evidence of the case studies is used to test the theory. In Chapter six the main conclusions, theoretical implications, and limitations of the thesis are presented.
