Abstract
International experiences and motivational intelligence appear to be related to each other but also to leadership. By working abroad as an expatriate, leaders develop a global mindset that is becoming essential to survive in today’s global business environment. They also develop a range of skills like anticipation, challenge and alignment further, making them more adaptive and flexible in specific culturally diverse situations. Too often, companies have lavished money on improving their leaders’ competences and capabilities. Most training programs tend to focus on teaching country-specific knowledge. International experiences are a powerful mean for leadership development and give managers opportunities to face surprise and the “unknown element”.
