Abstract
This master’s thesis is the translation and study of the first chapter of Jason A. Gillmer’s book, "Slavery and Freedom in Texas, Stories from the Courtroom, 1821–1871". The chapter translated, titled "Sex, Race and Family on the Gulf Coast", traces the history of John C. Clark, a wealthy white man who lived with an enslaved woman of colour for thirty years and the legal battle of their three children, Lourinda, Bishop and Nancy, former slaves and biracial people, to be recognised as John’s rightful heirs. The introduction presents the text on which the master’s thesis is based and its author, provides a brief historical and legal context and outlines the legal battle at the core of the story. It is followed by the translation of the aforementioned chapter, and by the translator’s commentaries on the choices she made to translate the text.
