- Abstract
- On 26 may of 2019, Vlaams Belang changed the Belgian political landscape by causing the so-called “Brown wave”. This master dissertation aims to analyse the reasons behind the success of the far right party and to see if this unexpected rise could be related to the communication strategies that the party adopted on social media. The central hypothesis of this master dissertation is that the communication strategies developed by the political formation had an influence on the results they obtained at the 2019 elections. It is then expected that the party adapts its strategies to the medium it uses and to the target audience of this medium. To answer those questions, two corpora were established on the basis of two social media, namely Instagram and Twitter. Those corpora made it possible to carry out a quantitative and qualitative analyses of the data. In this regard, the theory of Critical Discourse Analysis will be used. The aim of this master dissertation is thus to decode the success of the far-right party and to state if this success can be linked to the prominence of social media in our daily life.
